Jacques Chiraq Drillinois
2011 has been a pretty good year for new (to my ears) rappers so far. One of the last i got into is King Louie. Hailing from eastside chicago blah blah blah (*biz markie voice*)… He’s your regular hard guy from the hood, with materialistic motives. He’s also really good at rapping.
I think this song is the best case in his favor. It is 3 minutes of pure rap perfection. Obviously the g-side sample is beautiful, but it really is Louie that steals the show here with his ongoing-internal-rhymes-&-assonances-based flow.
This is probably the pinnacle of his art, but his other songs also feature this effortless flow, almost nonchalant, but with a rhyme pattern that makes it sound energetic. It sounds like he could rap for days. Another important thing about his rap skills is that he sounds comfortable on lex luger influenced beats, like “chiraq drillinois”, what too few rappers are.
I think he’s been influenced by a variety of different rappers, but the most obvious one is gucci mane. And by obvious, i don’t even mean that he raps on accordion and that he’s impersonating him on “gucci flow”.

ps: his next tape “dope & shrimp” has the best cover
